Fine as a treat

Can dogs eat apples?

Apple flesh is safe and popular. Remove the core and pips — apple seeds contain a cyanide precursor, though a dog would need to chew a great many to be poisoned.

What makes it harmful

Amygdalin in the seeds

Apple seeds contain amygdalin, which releases cyanide when the seed is crushed. The quantity in a few pips is small and swallowed whole seeds pass through intact — but there is no reason to include them.

How to prepare it

Sliced, core and pips removed. Skin is fine.
