Can dogs eat avocado?
Avocado is widely over-stated as a dog poison. Dogs are relatively resistant to persin — the real risks are the stone causing an obstruction and the high fat content.
If your dog reacts badly
If the stone was swallowed, call a vet. For a little flesh, watch for gut upset.
Signs to watch for
- vomiting
- diarrhoea
- repeated vomiting and straining (if the stone was swallowed)
When: Gut upset within hours; obstruction over days.
What makes it harmful
Persin — but dogs are far less susceptible than birds or livestock
Persin is seriously toxic to birds, rabbits, horses and ruminants, which is where avocado's reputation comes from. Dogs are notably resistant, and reported canine cases are mostly gastrointestinal upset rather than the cardiac damage seen in other species. The genuine hazards are mechanical and dietary: the stone is a classic obstruction, and avocado is very fatty, so a large amount risks pancreatitis.
