Do not feed
Can dogs eat bacon and cured pork?
Avoid bacon and other cured meats. The combination of very high fat and very high salt is a common trigger for pancreatitis.
What to do
Watch for repeated vomiting or a hunched posture and see a vet if they appear. A single stolen rasher rarely causes harm in a healthy dog.
Signs to watch for
- vomiting
- diarrhoea
- abdominal pain
- excessive thirst
- lethargy
Why
Cured meats concentrate both fat and sodium. A sudden fat load is the classic pancreatitis trigger, and the salt is a problem for dogs with heart or kidney disease.
Portion
About 540 kcal per 100 g, and roughly 2,000 mg of sodium.
Also check for
- onion or garlic in seasoning
- cooked bone in gammon joints
