Can dogs eat bread?

Plain baked bread is not toxic but has little to offer a dog beyond empty calories. Raw dough is a serious emergency, and some breads contain raisins or garlic.

Why

Baked bread is inert — the yeast is dead and the alcohol driven off. It is simply refined carbohydrate. The danger is the varieties: raisin bread, garlic bread, and anything still raw.

Never in this form

Raw dough. Raisin bread, malt loaf and hot cross buns. Garlic bread. Anything sweetened with xylitol.

Portion

About 265 kcal per 100 g. A small piece occasionally.
