Can dogs eat broccoli?
Broccoli is safe in small amounts but contains compounds that irritate the gut in quantity, and the stems can be a choking hazard.
Signs to watch for
- gas
- loose stools
- vomiting if a large amount was eaten
What makes it harmful
Isothiocyanates
Brassicas contain isothiocyanates, which irritate the stomach lining if enough is eaten. They also produce a lot of gas, which in deep-chested breeds is worth avoiding.
How much matters
Keep broccoli under about 10% of the daily food intake; above roughly 25% it is considered potentially harmful.
How to prepare it
Small pieces, plain, steamed rather than raw for easier digestion.
Portion
About 34 kcal per 100 g.
Also check for
- butter and cheese sauce
- large stem pieces
