Can dogs eat butter and cooking oils?

Small amounts of plain oil are not toxic, but fat is the main dietary trigger for pancreatitis and these are the most concentrated calories in the kitchen.

Signs to watch for

  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • abdominal pain

Why

Pure fat at roughly 900 kcal per 100 g. A tablespoon of oil can be a meaningful part of a small dog's entire daily energy requirement, and a sudden fat load risks pancreatitis.

Portion

Any oil is about 120 kcal per tablespoon. If a vet has recommended fish oil for skin or joints, follow their dose rather than guessing.

Also check for

  • garlic-infused oils
