Can dogs eat dates and figs?
Dates and figs are not toxic, but they are extremely high in sugar and the stones must be removed. Fresh figs can also irritate the mouth.
Signs to watch for
- diarrhoea
- vomiting
- drooling with fresh fig
Why
Both are very sugar-dense. Fresh figs contain ficin and psoralens, which irritate the skin and mouth; the dried fruit contains much less.
Never in this form
Date stones.
Portion
Dates run about 282 kcal per 100 g. One date is plenty.
