Can dogs eat fat trimmings and fatty leftovers?

Avoid fatty scraps. A sudden high-fat meal is the classic trigger for pancreatitis, which is painful, expensive to treat and sometimes fatal.

What to do

See a vet if a dog is repeatedly vomiting or holding itself hunched after a fatty meal.

Signs to watch for

  • repeated vomiting
  • hunched posture or 'praying' stance
  • abdominal pain
  • loss of appetite
  • diarrhoea
  • lethargy
  • fever

When: 24–72 hours.

Why

A large fat load overstimulates the pancreas, which begins digesting itself and the surrounding tissue. Miniature Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers and Cocker Spaniels are notably predisposed.

How much matters

Not a fixed threshold — it is the sudden change that matters. A dog unused to fat can develop pancreatitis from one plate of leftovers.

Also check for

  • holiday leftovers
  • bins
  • barbecue drippings
