Can dogs eat ice cream?

Ice cream is not toxic in its plain form but combines lactose, sugar and fat. Chocolate and sugar-free varieties are genuinely dangerous.

If your dog reacts badly

Call a vet if the ice cream was chocolate, or if it was sugar-free and may contain xylitol.

Signs to watch for

  • diarrhoea
  • vomiting
  • wind

Why

The lactose causes digestive upset and the sugar and fat are simply poor nutrition. The real hazards are what is added: chocolate, and xylitol in no-sugar varieties.

Never in this form

Chocolate, coffee, or any sugar-free variety.

Also check for

  • chocolate
  • xylitol
  • macadamia
  • raisins in rum-and-raisin
