Can dogs eat melatonin gummies and supplements?
Melatonin itself is sometimes prescribed for dogs, but gummy versions are frequently sweetened with xylitol — which makes them dangerous.
What to do
Check the ingredients for xylitol. If present, call a vet immediately. Otherwise call for advice on the dose.
Signs to watch for
- sedation
- wobbliness
- vomiting
- collapse if xylitol is present
Why
Melatonin has genuine veterinary uses at prescribed doses. The problem is the format: gummies and chewables are among the most common xylitol products in the house, and human supplements are dosed for a 70 kg adult.
Also check for
- xylitol
- human dosing
- added iron in multivitamins
