Fine as a treat

Can dogs eat pumpkin?

Plain pumpkin is safe and often recommended by vets for mild digestive upsets, because its soluble fibre helps firm up loose stools.

How to prepare it

Plain cooked or plain tinned pumpkin. Tinned pumpkin pie filling is a different product and contains sugar and spices including nutmeg.

Never in this form

Pumpkin pie filling, spiced pumpkin, the stalk and raw skin.

Portion

Roughly 20 kcal per 100 g. A common starting point is one to four tablespoons a day depending on size, but ask your vet if you are using it to treat diarrhoea rather than as a treat.
