Can dogs eat salt and salt dough?
Large amounts of salt cause brain swelling. The usual culprits are salt dough ornaments, homemade play dough and dogs drinking sea water.

Do not wait for symptoms and do not try to make your dog sick unless a vet has told you to — some substances cause more damage coming back up. Have your dog's weight, what was eaten, roughly how much, and when, ready before you call.
What to do
Call a vet. Offer normal access to water but do not force large volumes — rapid rehydration is itself dangerous.
Signs to watch for
- intense thirst
- vomiting
- diarrhoea
- wobbliness
- tremors
- confusion
- seizures
When: 1–3 hours.
What makes it harmful
Sodium
A sudden sodium load pulls water out of brain cells. Dangerously, correcting it too quickly causes the cells to swell instead, so treatment must be gradual and supervised — this is not something to fix at home with water.
