Do not feed
Can dogs eat sausages, hot dogs and processed meat?
Avoid processed meats. They are high in salt and fat, usually contain onion or garlic powder, and often carry nitrites and other additives.
What to do
Usually none needed for a small amount. Seek advice if a lot was eaten, particularly a seasoned or garlic-heavy product.
Signs to watch for
- vomiting
- diarrhoea
- excessive thirst
- abdominal pain
Why
Beyond the fat and salt, most contain allium powders — which are far more concentrated than fresh onion — and sausage casings are a choking risk for dogs that swallow without chewing.
Never in this form
Anything seasoned with onion or garlic powder, which is most of them.
Also check for
- onion powder
- garlic powder
- high salt
- casings
