Can dogs eat seaweed and nori?
Plain dried seaweed is safe in tiny amounts, but it is very high in iodine and salt. Never let a dog eat seaweed washed up on a beach.
If your dog reacts badly
See a vet urgently if a dog ate dried seaweed on a beach.
Signs to watch for
- vomiting
- lethargy
- bloating and abdominal pain after beach seaweed
Why
Excess iodine affects thyroid function. Beach seaweed is a specific and serious hazard: it expands dramatically in the stomach and has caused fatal obstructions.
Never in this form
