Do not feed star fruit. It is very high in soluble oxalate and can cause acute kidney injury.

Do not wait for symptoms and do not try to make your dog sick unless a vet has told you to — some substances cause more damage coming back up. Have your dog's weight, what was eaten, roughly how much, and when, ready before you call.

What to do

Call a vet.

Signs to watch for

  • drooling
  • vomiting
  • weakness
  • tremors
  • reduced urination

When: Within hours.

What makes it harmful

Soluble oxalates, plus a neurotoxin (caramboxin)

Oxalate binds calcium and precipitates in the renal tubules. Star fruit carries far more soluble oxalate than most fruits.

How much matters

Not precisely established for dogs; treat any meaningful ingestion as significant, particularly in a dog with existing kidney disease.

How confident is this

emerging

Supported by recent work, but the evidence base is still small.
